AIRBORNE SOLDIER DOWN - CWO (RET'D) JOHN VASS, M.M.M. C.D.

Sad news to hear of John's passing, our thoughts and prayers go out to this family and friends.

CWO (Ret'd) John Donald Albert Vass M.M.M.,C.D.

Born on February 12, 1950 in Penticton BC to Donald and Isabelle Vass. After a short but courageous fight against cancer, John passed away on 11 April at the age of 62. After a long and distinguished career in the Canadian Forces, John retired in 2005, as the RCEME Branch CWO, to Kingston, ON, the hometown of his loving wife Joanne.

A talented and dedicated vehicle technician, CWO Vass (Ret’d) enjoyed many postings and notable appointments across Canada and Germany. Proudly serving with the Canadian Airborne Regiment in Edmonton and Petawawa, the Special Service Force in Petawawa and later 2 Brigade, he cherished his time as a RCEME soldier and most notably, his operational deployments to Cyprus, Croatia and twice to Bosnia. Picking up the bag pipes after a hiatus of over 40 years, John joined the PWOR Pipes and Drums and shortly after had the honour of being appointed the Bands’ Pipe Major.

CWO John Vass (Ret’d) will be sadly missed by his loving wife Joanne of 43 years, his daughter Laurie, son John (Krista), grandson Joey Schieman (his father John), his mother Isabelle, brother Robert Vass (Rosemary), sisters Cathy Vass (Jacques) and Margie McPhee (Bruce) , brother in-law Chris Hogan (Nicole), sister-in-law Marg Watson (Doug), Pat and his many dear nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Predeceased by his father Donald Vass, and his mother and father-in-law Dorothy and Vincent Hogan.

CWO Vass' Funeral, A celebration of his life, will be held at the PWOR Chapel, St. Paul's Anglican Church, (Queen and Montreal Street) on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at 1300 hrs., Cremation with a family interment service at Beechwood Cemetery, Ottawa, on Friday.

In memory of John, donations made to Juvenile Diabetes Association, Soldier On Program or UHKF Cancer Centre would be appreciated by his family. (Donations by cheque, credit card or charity website)
